Each tick has 50 ms, and adding cores does not make one finish faster. Every plan runs on the AMD EPYC 4584PX at 4.2 GHz base and up to 5.7 GHz boost. The Minecraft Wiki warns that Bedrock Dedicated Server performs poorly on some multi-core server processors with low clock speeds.
Chunk loading, world saves, garbage collection and off-thread plugin tasks. They raise how much the machine does around the tick, not how fast the tick completes.
Loaded chunks, entities and plugins live in the heap. Set -Xms and -Xmx to the same value and leave the rest for the operating system: a heap that takes every gigabyte pauses longer to collect, and those pauses land in the middle of a tick. The Minecraft Wiki notes Bedrock is less memory hungry than Java.
Worlds are region files, read and written in small pieces. Solid state storage is what keeps chunk loading from becoming the thing that stalls a tick, and every plan stores them on NVMe.

Disk grows with the load as well: at 20 Java players the model plans 10 GB, 13 GB and 16 GB for the three levels, before the world itself grows, and the smallest plan has 20 GB of NVMe. When a modpack publishes its own memory requirement, trust that over any general model.
Java traffic is checked against the Minecraft handshake and login, and Bedrock traffic against RakNet. Traffic that does not speak the protocol is dropped. The check runs at the network driver, before the server process sees any of it. Floods too big for the link are absorbed first, by 17 Tbps of upstream mitigation capacity.
TCP connection openers that are never completed, and SYNs whose stack fingerprint looks forged, are separated from real clients on the Java port. On Java, an established connection cannot quietly carry more than one player needs. A flood riding a single open connection hits the per-connection ceiling.
The UDP first-packet challenge drops single-shot spoofed floods under load, and the zero-day engine learns the shape of a new attack while it runs.
A bot join completes the handshake, speaks the protocol and logs in, so every packet is well formed. online-mode=true makes each bot need a real paid account, and a whitelist closes a private server completely. Leave the query listener off unless a tool needs it, and reach RCON through an SSH tunnel instead of opening its port.

Java 21 runs every current Paper build; a Fabric or Forge pack names the Java version it needs. Give the server a user of its own and never run it as root. Bedrock Dedicated Server is a native Linux binary from Mojang, not a .jar.

Leave online-mode on, set max-players to what the machine can hold, and turn the whitelist on for a private server. Run it under systemd so it starts on boot and comes back after a crash.

Minecraft (Java) writes a TCP 25565 rule and Minecraft (Bedrock) a UDP 19132 rule, each with a packet-rate ceiling. Changed server-port? Edit the rule to match, or it protects a port nothing listens on.

Watch milliseconds per tick with spark, set -Xms and -Xmx to the same value, lower simulation-distance before view-distance, and pregenerate the world. Copy the world before every plugin, config change and update.
